Mark has been developing a Card component to the game. In the original version of the game,when damage is taken the player must roll for each internal hit. This brings the game to a screeching halt. With Marks custom cards the damage process can be accelerated and game play resumed much quicker. He has also incorporated die rolls on the card faces so the game can conceivably be played without dice. The only negative to using the cards in place of dice is you would have to reshuffle after each player uses the deck to insure the odds remain the same.

Bret, Dave and Mark, play tested with the new cards and reoriented ourselves to the classic, simplified rules. The Scenario:Planet Killer taken form the original Series Doomsday Machine played well. Do to time constraints we didn’t get a chance to use the cards for damage. Further testing will take place in the near future.

Initial publication of the games in the Star Fleet Battles series. This was one of the first Task Force Games Pocket Games. It was re-implemented and expanded several times after the original “Pocket Game.”

This is the classic game of tactical Starship combat set in the Star Trek universe (the original TV show), though you will never see “Star Trek” anywhere in the game (licensing limitation). Players command one or more ships from the Federation, Klingon, Gorn, Romulan, or Kzinti fleets, sporting all of the expected Star Trek weaponry like phasers, disruptor bolts, photon and plasma torpedoes, and tractor beams. Also includes other weaponry not commonly seen such as drones (homing missiles).

Players allocate energy and plot movement before each turn, then move all of the ships simultaneously. Weapons are fired at will during the turn (i.e., not plotted before-hand like movement). Ships have shields and armor for protection. When these are breached, various ship systems are damaged, potentially crippling the combat capability of the ship, and eventually resulting in ship destruction.

The Arena: Talisman

Talisman has gone through many iterations as well as companies. Bret’s customized version is a pleasure to play on.  Each Realm has a distinctive feel that adds to game play. For more than 3 players this classic is definitely a stay at home evening of play with games extending over six hours with more than 6 players or playing multiple characters. In my opinion Bret’s  version is in serious contention for tournament play at an upcoming GenCon should DWD ever decide to REF.

After a brutal onslaught of Roman Chariot racing nothing satisfies  like quality Sushi. We dinned at Sakura, located at 105 S, Main Street, Mt. Prospect IL. The Staff was attentive the the food very Oishii.

Last Night On Earth

Last Night On Earth continues to prove to be a well thought out, well balanced game. We played the Supply Run scenario with two zombie masters and four hero’s. The Hero’s must gather 9 Supply markers and return them to the barricaded Manor house before the sun sets. Seems easy enough. HA! As usual the game was a nail biter coming down to the very last die roll before the sun set. Equally, the game shifted in favor of the Zombies and the Hero’s each side dominating for a few rounds only to come back from the brink. The victory went to the zombies but thanks to 1 of 2 Zombie Master,Victor “The Cleaner” bold move to explode a Zombie next to 3 hero’s, a plan which backfired (and almost gave Bret “The Enforcer” 2 of 2 Zombie Master a heart attack) killed the surrounding zombies, the Hero’s had a resurgence and almost won the day.

Fast, easy, fun.

If you go more than three rounds with this game you’re doing it wrong. The mechanics couldn’t be simpler. You need to occupy 5 planets. State your attack ask for support throw some cards. That’s it.

The beauty of the game is in the race abilities and the social interaction. Each race is equipped with an innate pimper. During the invite stage of an attack players can be invited to aid the attacker or the defender. This is a dangerous time. A support player may turn the tide of a battle but at what cost? Their ability may be the key to set them up for the win. Play with caution!
